Claire Stone has been a solicitor for over 20 years, specialising in commercial and residential property law. Before joining Setfords, she trained as a legal executive and worked as a commercial property lawyer in London, before moving to Sussex to work in-house for two large companies. Today, she acts for clients across England and Wales, including buying and selling property and commercial landlord and tenant disputes.
For Claire, the appeal of consultancy came down to one thing.
“Being able to choose when to work, and which clients to agree to work with.”
A Day on Her Own Terms
Claire’s move to consultancy has given her a level of control she didn’t have in an employed role. She can agree to more or less work depending on her capacity.
“I don’t have to take on work that is something I am not comfortable with.”
Claire uses this extra free time to volunteer at a swimming school, take long lunches when she fancies, and fit in a walk, a swim or a coffee around her working day. She’s even worked from the beach.
Support That Has Her Back
Claire had some early concerns before joining Setfords, particularly around invoicing enough and covering holidays. The business development team helped bring in a steady flow of work.
“I was extremely busy in the first year.”
Holiday cover, once a worry, is now largely resolved thanks to a system where consultants can ask each other for help. And while Claire works from home most of the time, she stays connected by popping into the Guildford or London offices, meeting up with other consultants, or picking up the phone for a chat.
“Setfords head office are all so supportive and helpful. It is easier when you have got to know a few key people, or indeed know who to ask.”
Knowing what’s expected of her has made a difference too.
“I know what I have to do to be successful, as Setfords are clear about that, which is a good thing.”
Considering Consultancy?
Claire’s advice for anyone weighing up the move is straightforward.
“Just do it. Make a few initial contacts with other consultants and enjoy.”
Her top tip for staying productive while working remotely:
“Have a good diary system. Be clear with your goals and try not to let clients bulldoze those.”
Outside work, Claire is a keen walker, cook and Scout Leader, and enjoys spending time with her family.
For Claire, consultancy has meant building a career that fits around her life, not the other way round.
