For far too long, traditional firms have failed to evolve. They have convinced themselves that they must cling to the archaic ways of operating, which, in turn, has led to many lawyers, like Andrew Wendon, spending too much time worrying about office politics, internal competition and hitting their targets.
Andrew had spent 22 years of his career as a partner and head of litigation for a firm in Exeter, where he specialised in handling high-value claims. After many years of trying to hit targets with little flexibility, he decided it was time for a change…
Moving forward
Andrew had spent many years working for the same firm. He put in the hard work trying to make them happy, day in and day out. But, he realised that this wasn’t exactly what he wanted. Freedom, flexibility, and less rigid structure: what he truly desired just wasn’t possible at a traditional firm. So, he began to look into other options, including making the move to become a consultant solicitor:
“I was looking for increased autonomy and flexibility to continue to provide a high level of service to clients with fewer organisational impediments.”
Like many of our consultant solicitors, Andrew wanted the best of both worlds: more flexibility and autonomy whilst continuing to provide the highest quality service possible. Although other fee share firms claim to offer similar levels of flexibility, certain aspects set Setfords apart from the rest in Andrew’s mind.
“Setfords offers excellent marketing nationwide, and I like the progressive ethos of the firm. It is also very important to me to be part of a high profile legal 100 firm.”
He adds:
“I am impressed by Setfords’ modern and pioneering outlook; this is very different to the more antiquated approach taken by law firms I have been involved with previously.”
If, like Andrew, you’re looking for a law firm that offers fresh thinking and an ideal work-life balance coupled with a prestigious reputation, Setfords is here for you.
Work-life balance
For many lawyers, a healthy work-life balance is nearly impossible to achieve. With long hours, hefty billing targets, and limited flexibility, it can often feel hopelessly out of reach. However, since being at Setfords, Andrew has realised that it is feasible to have the best of both worlds…
“Because of the flexibility and being my own boss, my work fits in with my life rather than the other way around.”
For Andrew, the opportunity to continue building his career by only working whenever and wherever he wants was one of the main draws of the Setfords model. And, the freedom to choose what cases he wants to take on, and the ability to have more control of his free time really allow Andrew to excel in ways which were not possible before. He believes:
“The best part about being a consultant solicitor is being able to continue practicing law in a very well run and thoughtful organisation which understands the importance of flexibility and integrity.”
With his newfound freedom, Andrew also has more time to spend on his numerous hobbies and interests, leading to a far better work-life balance:
“Outside of work, I enjoy playing the piano and giving concerts, walking, reading, drinking red wine and spending time with my family and friends.”
Full support
Ask any of our consultant solicitors what truly sets us apart from the rest, and they will probably say our support. Many firms claim to offer the same standard and level of support to consultants like Andrew, but more often than not, they only provide the bare minimum. He says:
“Setfords offers a high level of secretarial and admin support, which is essential when dealing with complex cases. They also have the benefit of being part of an exciting and pioneering service provider whilst still enjoying autonomy.
All of the admin staff have a ‘can do’ attitude, and the marketing is the best I have seen, as is the business development.”
Culture
Most lawyers want to feel a part of something meaningful. However, in many traditional firms, the culture can be quite toxic and competitive. Whilst work is important, so is making friends and enjoying your time in the office. Setfords people have regular parties, get-togethers and frequent networking events, so that even though they work independently, they never have to feel alone.
“Setfords make their consultants feel valued; I attended a cruise along the Thames last summer, which was really fun as well as receiving some delicious gifts when I joined the firm and billed my first case!”
When asked what he would say to anyone considering consultancy, Andrew said:
“Go for it – I have no regrets!”
