Entrepreneurial lawyer Caroline Fitzpatrick built up a hugely successful practice
as a consultant solicitor in Marbella…

Working as a consultant solicitor offers plenty of benefits. Many entrepreneurial lawyers enjoy the freedom it gives them to work from wherever they are in the world, as well as the opportunity to earn more whilst dealing with fewer time wasting tasks. One such lawyer is Caroline Fitzpatrick.

Caroline is a consultant property solicitor, covering both residential and commercial property as well as property finance. She had a varied career before joining Setfords and is now enjoying the freedom that consultancy gives her. Here, she discusses her career as a Setfords consultant solicitor so far.

More freedom than ever

After qualifying, Caroline started her career working at several traditional law firms, before setting up her own firm in Kingston. She sold her firm five years ago, working there as a consultant for three years before joining Setfords.

But why did she decide to make the switch to consultancy? She says:

“As an employed solicitor I always felt that I was carrying others and not getting a fair share of my bills. As a consultant solicitor, I can earn a greater percentage all while working for myself and enjoying greater autonomy.”

At Setfords, consultants can earn up to 80% of their billings, allowing them a greater level of financial freedom to go alongside the other benefits of consultancy.

For Caroline, these benefits are also a matter of freedom of location. At a traditional firm, and even running her own firm, she was not able to enjoy the same opportunities she has as a consultant. She says:

“The reason why I sold my own firm was because I wanted to move to Spain and spend more time with my daughter who is now 12. We moved to Spain 6 years ago and live in Marbella. I have not looked back as life out here is great. My daughter goes to an international school, and I have a 15-year-old Westie called Rex who enjoys life here too!”

When it comes to flexibility, there is truly no equal to the consultancy model. Our consultant solicitors can work from almost any country in the world as easily as they would in the UK, thanks to our remote working systems and dedicated support teams who are always on hand to help.

Industry-leading support

When considering consultancy, many lawyers worry about finding work. However, Caroline was pleasantly surprised by how many previous clients sought her out to work with again:

“When I started my own business I was surprised that many clients and agents tracked me down and the work came to me. I have not had to go out and actively look for it or advertise so I have been very fortunate.”

Nonetheless, even when lawyers don’t have the same level of previous following as Caroline, Setfords is here to offer support. Every year, we drive millions of pounds worth of qualified leads to our lawyers. Many lawyers take advantage of this support, especially once starting out before they establish their own client base.

A safe haven

In the current climate of instability, another common worry amongst those who are thinking of becoming consultants is about leaving the ‘safety’ of an employed role. This worry is understandable, as nobody wants to be concerned about losing their income.

However, at Setfords we aim to offer a ‘safe haven’ where lawyers who are willing to work hard can reap rewards beyond what they would expect in a traditional employed role. Caroline says:

“In an unstable market, an employed role is no guarantee of security. When you are self employed as a consultant, you can at least take the benefit financially for the work that comes in”

So, if you’re willing to try something new in 2023, consultancy might just be the answer. With greater freedom to be entrepreneurial, earn a greater percentage of your billings, and work from wherever you wish, consultancy at Setfords is hard to beat.
